It’s no wonder that peony is one of the most popular choices for weddings, and one of the most common questions we get from our clients is the seasonal availability of peonies. Peonies are generally available from late May to early July in Ontario. We could still get peonies during the winter-spring season, but they are at very expensive rates and their quality is highly depending on the weather and shipping condition. Another most frequently asked question we get from our clients is what flowers can stand in as a perfect substitute when peonies are not in season.
A symbol of romance with gorgeous ruffles range from the soft and elegant to the bold and feminine, garden roses have become a perfect choice for wedding flowers. I feel lucky to have grown up in a city where peony is the provincial flower, and I can tell you that peonies often get confused with garden roses due to their similar shapes and sizes. Garden roses come in a much wider selection of colors than peonies. Peonies only come in white, pink, coral charm and red charm here in Toronto where garden roses come in different shades of pink, yellow, peach, orange, novelty, lavender and white. Garden roses also come in a much wider selection of varieties and the most popular substitutes for peonies are English Roses also known as David Austin such as Juliet, Patience, and Rosalind. You may also wonder what is a garden rose and what make it so different from a modern rose. Garden roses are larger in size, more fragrant, and have a lot more petal layers than modern roses. Garden roses are more delicate and difficult to grow and most of them only boom once each season where modern roses repeat boom.
Ranunculus are known for their multiple layered delicate paper-thin petals and their colors. These gorgeous soft blooms also have high petal counts just as peonies and garden roses. Even though they are much smaller in sizes, their unique features will surely catch your eyes in no time.
